Why shifting your POV is so powerful

This is a really fun optical illusion. It is also a brilliant metaphor for how and why coaching works. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  1. Your brain takes in information and processes things in its own unique way. This is a true evolutionary miracle, and it works brilliantly–much of the time.
  2. Your mind (and mine) also has biases, limitations and blind spots. It believes that what it sees is a true representation of the world, but sometimes things are not as they seem.
  3. Unless the “trick” is revealed, we will go to our graves believing that what we see is what there isFor example, for most of the video, we see a cute 3D dino and It’s real for us.
  4. From a different angle or point of view, like the one we get at the very end of the video, there is a surprising new reality.

This is what we do in coaching: We shift the point of view and reveal that what we see is not all there is. And in place of a biased or limiting belief about ourselves, or about how a situation or the world is, we realize that we are capable of much more than we believed. The illusion is exposed and the world is changed–the impossible is actually possible.

Our brains do what they are designed to do. In the case of this cute green metaphor, it’s interpreting faces as 3D, though the list of mental illusions and biases we are prone to is dauntingly long! This is why we need a trusted observer who can help us to see things from a revealing new angle.

Reading a description of the experience of this shift is not the same as experiencing it directly. So watch the video. It’s fun. And, if you feel inspired to experience more, contact us about having a sample coaching conversation.
